Aus der Laudatio: “Your groundbreaking scholarship in ancient religion has transformed the study of Early Judaism, Jewish Mysticism, and the relationship between Judaism and Christianity. You have played an instrumental role in reviving the discipline of Jewish Studies in post-Holocaust Germany. […] You shaped generations of students and scholars through your teaching, mentorship, and intellectual leadership. You also played a foundational role in advancing the field through your leadership of Princeton’s Program in Judaic Studies and as co-founder of the Jewish Studies Quarterly. Your influential books, including The Jewish Jesus, The Origins of Jewish Mysticism, and Jesus in the Talmud, have reshaped scholarly understanding of Jewish history and thought on both sides of the Atlantic. Honored with Germany’s Leibniz Prize and the Mellon Award in the Humanities, your scholarship has earned international distinction. Following your return to Germany, you continued your leadership as honorary professor at Humboldt University in Berlin, director of the Jewish Museum Berlin, and Trustee of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe Foundation. A scholar of extraordinary breath, rigor, and humanity. You have established yourself as one of the world’s most influential voices of Jewish Studies and Humanities at large.”
