The Lilli and Michael Sommerfreund Visiting Professorship in Jewish Studies 2026 (1 April – 30 September 2026)

The Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg / University of Jewish Studies Heidelberg (HfJS) cordially invites applications for the Lilli and Michael Sommerfreund Visiting Professorship in Jewish Studies for the summer term 2026 (1 April – 30 September 2026).

Qualifications: Applicants are required to hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Jewish Studies or a re- lated field. In accordance with § 47 Abs. 2 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg (LHG), a Habilitation or an equivalent postdoctoral qualification is also required. Demonstrated pedagogical aptitude for university-level teaching is expected.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in English and supervise students at the undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate (M.A.) levels. A particular focus will be on advising students in the international Master of Arts program “Jewish Civilizations.”

Other Conditions: The appointed professor is expected to reside in Heidelberg during the teaching semesters.
