Pending approval of external funding Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Jewish Moralistic Writings of the Early Modern Period: 1600–1800” in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG). The position commences on October 1, 2018.
It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 29,25 work hours per week.
The fixed-term nature of this contract is based upon Section 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Labor Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed to June 30, 2020.
The University aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and explicitly encourages qualified women to apply. Equally qualified female applicants will receive preference in accordance with the Hamburg Equality Act (Hamburgisches Gleichstellungsgesetz, HmbGleiG).
Responsibilities:
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Specific Duties:
The PhD candidate will be a member of the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group “Jewish Moralistic Writings of the Early Modern Period: 1600–1800” funded by the German Research Foundation. The vast body of Jewish moralistic writings (known as musar in Hebrew) constitutes one of the most popular, yet understudied corpora of Jewish literature. The group’s objective is to compile an inventory that systematically documents musar-writings that were composed between 1600 and 1800. The inventory aims at presenting the diversity of musar, identifying different schools, literary genres, and literary strategies. The joint project will be supplemented by individual studies that will give the group’s members the opportunity to evaluate the data brought together in the inventory.
The successful applicant will contribute to the preparation of the corpus of Hebrew musar-writings of the inventory, and pursue an individual research project on a topic related to the project’s thematic focus.
Requirements:
A university degree in a relevant field.
Graduate students with an M.A. degree in a relevant field, who focus on Early Modern Jewish History, Jewish Thought, the History of the Hebrew Book, or other subjects related to the project, and who
have a keen interest in current theoretical trends in the humanities and social sciences (textual criticism, gender, the study of emotions etc.), as well as interdisciplinary approaches, are
encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of Hebrew and English. Proficiency in other languages relevant for the project is desirable. The candidate should have a
high degree of personal responsibility and be willing to work closely with the other members of the group.

1818 verfasste der Student Leopold Zunz in Berlin einen Text, der heute als Gründungsdokument der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung des Judentums gilt. Trotzdem ist der Name Zunz heute kaum noch bekannt. Um das zu ändern, fährt ein US-Rabbi mit dem "Zunz-Mobil" durch Washington D.C. und Umgebung.

Internationale Tagung zum jüdisch-christlichen Dialog: ‚Gegenwart und Zukunft des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs. Historische und theologische Perspektiven‘

Herzliche Einladung zur internationalen Tagung zum Jüdischen-Christlichen Dialog ‚Gegenwart und Zukunft des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs. Historische und theologische Perspektiven‘. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass es uns gelungen ist, diese hochkarätig besetzte Tagung auf den Weg zu bringen. Auch wollen wir damit den jüdisch-christlichen Dialog deutlich stärken und freuen uns auf die guten Vorträge, Workshops und Diskussionen.
Inhalt der Tagung
In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ist auf internationaler Ebene im Kontext des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs Vieles in Bewegung geraten – mit Blick auf die Reflexion über die Geschichte des christlichen Antisemitismus von der Antike bis hin zur Shoah, aber auch hinsichtlich der Neuformulierung christlichen Selbstverständnisses in der Begegnung mit dem Judentum oder jüdischer Wahrnehmungen des Christentums. Die Konferenz, die namhafte Forscher*innen und Repräsentant*innen des Dialoges aus dem In- und Ausland zusammenbringt, soll Erreichtes bilanzieren, die unterschiedlichen Facetten des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs der Gegenwart diskutieren und ein Gespräch eröffnen, wo neben den Schwierigkeiten Neuansätze des Dialoges liegen.
Die Veranstaltung beginnt am 13. Mai in der Goethe Universität Frankfurt, wird am Montagnachmittag im Haus am Dom fortgesetzt und endet am 15. Mai wieder in der Goethe-Univeristät.

Book Publication Grants
The World Union of Jewish Studies announces its call for 2018 book publication grants. WUJS members who do not have research funds and have never held a tenured position at a university may apply for the book publication grant. The grants of up to 5,000 NIS each will be paid directly to the publishing houses of the successful applicants. Please note you have to be WUJS member to be eligible to apply for the book publication grant. Membership applies for a calendar year. For 2018 membership dues payment click here. All applicants must submit their CVs, one letter of recommendation for the book, a short book description (up to 2 pages) and the contract with the publishing house. Sprachkurs modernes Hebräisch (Ivrit)
Das Institut für den Nahen und Mittleren Osten der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Schwerpunkt Judaistik, bietet am Ende des Sommersemesters 2018 einen zweiwöchigen Intensivkurs modernes Hebräisch an.

Im Kurs werden die Grundlagen der heute in Israel gesprochenen hebräischen Sprache vermittelt. Er bietet einen Einstieg in elementare Strukturen und die hebräische Schrift. Erlernt werden die Grundlagen des Verbsystems und der Basiswortschatz, der in Alltagssituationen notwendig ist. Durch Diskussionen, Übungen, Hausaufgabenbearbeitung und Präsentationen vertiefen und erweitern Sie Ihr Hörverstehen und Ihre mündliche Kommunikationsfähigkeit. Dazu bietet der Kurs zwei kostenlose Veranstaltungen außerhalb des Kurses, die Einblicke in die jüdisch-israelische Kultur geben.

Urban Jewish Heritage

Urban Jewish Heritage: Presence and Absence is an international conference taking place as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, in Krakow, Poland. Our final call for papers is currently open until 11th May, and I would be most grateful if you would share this with colleagues at Chair for Judaic Studies, University of Mainz.
The conference will take place from 3-7 September 2018 and will examine the pasts, presents and futures for urban areas with Jewish heritage. The theme of the papers accepted so far cover the breadth of issues and opportunities that surround the history, conservation, interpretation and development of Jewish heritage in towns and cities across Europe.
